Manhunt for alleged Houston deputy killer comes to an end

The Houston investigation ended Wednesday night when police said they shot and killed a suspect and a deputy who was trying to execute a warrant.

Houston police announced that 56-year-old Robert Lee Davis, also known as Christopher Davis, is wanted in connection with the deputy's death.

“A short time ago, a suspect was shot and killed by law enforcement officers behind a store near the original shooting scene here at StellaLink. The suspect is deceased,” police said in a post on X.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire and Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz announced earlier in the day that Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jesus Jesse Vargas was shot in the head and killed while executing a warrant for a repeat offender. did.

“This afternoon we lost a local hero in Deputy Vargas of the Brazoria County Sheriff's Office,” Whitmire said.

The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Dollar General store.

Vargas and his partner were reportedly serving a warrant against the suspect in the parking lot, and when they approached the fugitive's car, they opened fire and fled the scene.

Authorities said Vargas was working as a member of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offender Task Force at the time of the shooting.

Officials said Vargas was shot in the head.

Vargas was taken to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said Vargas was a 17-year veteran of the Army and leaves behind a wife and three children.

Harris County Officer Alan Rosen posted on X that his department is assisting in the search for the suspect.

“We are praying for the safety of the police officer who was shot and killed this morning while executing a warrant,” Rosen wrote. “Please keep this officer and his family in your prayers!!!! I have a deputy with this task force who, along with other law enforcement partners, is searching for the suspect!”

Police released a photo of Davis wearing a blue Nike hoodie with white text, blue jeans and blue sneakers before he was found.

The Houston Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted police in their search for Davis.
