Police in Texas have confirmed they are searching for a possible serial killer suspect after DNA testing linked him to unrelated murders.
“Someone who commits a truly brutal murder has probably committed something similar in the past.”
Austin Police Department said Police said at a news conference Wednesday that they were searching for a short, Hispanic man seen on security cameras near the crime scene. The suspect was seen walking with Alyssa Ann Rivera, 34, on June 21 before her death. Her body was later found in an abandoned house on Metcalf Street.
Police said DNA evidence from the case matched DNA evidence from a 2018 unsolved murder case.
Police said 28-year-old Alba Jenise Aviles was found murdered on April 14 of that year after leaving the Caribbean nightclub on Felter Lane in Austin, just three miles from where Rivera’s body was found six years later.
“It’s pure coincidence that there’s such a geographic connection,” said Sergeant Nathan Sexton of the Atlanta Police Homicide Division.
Police also believe both victims were sexually assaulted, and Sexton said DNA found at both crime scenes had “multiple sources.”
Police believe the man had not been arrested previously because his DNA profile did not link to anyone in the police DNA database.
“Typically, someone who commits a very brutal murder would have committed something similar before, or at least been arrested, but that does not appear to be the case here,” Sexton said.
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. It was caught on surveillance camera.
