Controversy Surrounds University of Pennsylvania Professor After Tweets Following Assassination
A senior official at the University of Pennsylvania is facing backlash due to a contentious post on X, in the wake of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Professor Michael E. Mann, who directs the Science Center for Sustainability and Media, ignited criticism with his now-deleted tweet, stating, “White violence is out of control.”
Mann also shared several posts, including one from Max Granger, related to Ezra Klein’s column in the New York Times, expressing mockery towards conservative activists. It’s interesting, isn’t it? This kind of rhetoric seems to spark intense reactions from various sides.
Just a few months prior to his death, Kirk had warned about what he termed a left-leaning “assassination culture.”
Mann’s social media activity caught the attention of conservative pundits and Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick, who remarked, “This behavior is not only mean but also dangerous.”
In another instance, Will Hild, Executive Director of Consumer Research, expressed that Mann’s remarks are unacceptable and suggested he should be dismissed from his position at the university. It’s a serious accusation, and it raises questions about accountability within academia.
GOP Communications Director Zack Parkinson pointed out Mann’s connections to the Democratic Party, noting past commendations from notable figures like former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Parkinson emphasized that Mann is closely tied to the democratic establishment, frequently invited to testify before Congress and involved with political events.
Following the intense scrutiny, Mann attempted to clarify his stance by stating that he had merely agreed with broader criticism of Klein’s perspective on Kirk, disavowing the inflammatory comments made about him. However, the issue of political violence, he stressed, should not be taken lightly from any angle.
Kirk’s fatal shooting has prompted a mix of respect for him and his family, alongside contentious responses from various commentators regarding the nature of the tragedy.
University representatives and Mann’s spokesperson have not yet responded to requests for comments on the unfolding situation.
