Red Sox’s Manny Ramirez Critiques Team Over Devers Trade

The Yankees and Red Sox have formed a surprising partnership in trading, and now a Boston icon is using the Yankees as a case study for business practices.

In what seems like an ongoing saga of their rivalry, Red Sox legend Manny Ramirez highlighted Yankees captain Aaron Judge while commenting on the tension surrounding Rafael Devers, who was recently traded to the San Francisco Giants.

“Devers was treated poorly by the Red Sox. It’s not just about pride; I think there was a lack of respect and communication from the team,” Ramirez shared with MLB reporter Hector Gomez.

“They would never have done something like that to Roger Clemens. I can’t imagine the Yankees telling Judge, ‘Hey, we’re moving you to catcher now,’” he added.

Ramirez, who understands team dynamics well from his own experiences with the Red Sox from 2001-2008, pointed out that while he had his own challenges, the team had kept him despite his antics until they traded him in his 2008 season.

The collaborative spirit was crucial for Boston’s championships in 2004 and 2007, and Ramirez believes those experiences contribute to a player’s growth.

“Devers needed someone on the team to guide him. I’m sharing this because I didn’t get along with a few players. Ortiz and Pedro Martinez tried to mentor me, but I was resistant to their advice,” he said. “Look at Ortiz now; he embraces it.”

The friction between the Red Sox and Devers became particularly intense when the team pursued Alex Bregman to play his position, a move Devers opposed.

Despite initially settling into a designated hitter role, Devers was pressured to switch positions again after Tristan Casas’s injury forced the team’s hand.

Ultimately, President Craig Breslow decided to trade Devers to the Giants in exchange for two major league players and two prospects.

“Over the past few months, we’ve been regrouping and trying to realign our vision,” said Red Sox President Sam Kennedy before a recent game. “We couldn’t find common ground, so we made a significant move.”

Ramirez firmly believes the responsibility lies with the team rather than the players.

“The handling of Devers was quite poor. They should’ve communicated better, instead of dropping this on him during spring training and telling him about moving to a new position at the last minute,” he remarked to Gomez.

“This reflects a lack of experience from the general manager and a failure in guidance within the team.”
