Manny Rutinel's vegan activism clashes with Colorado's 8th district

Colorado Congressional Race Highlights Manny Lutinel’s Evolving Views

Manny Lutinel, a state representative and Democratic candidate for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District, has long been critical of ranching and other animal-based industries. Interestingly, this district relies heavily on those very sectors.

As he works to unseat Republican Rep. Gabe Evans, questions arise regarding Lutinel’s views on the meat industry, especially considering his past rhetoric. In a recent interview, he mentioned he’s been rethinking his position on ranching.

“Like any industry, there are bad actors. I’ve been vocal against the cruelty present in parts of the food industry and the negative impact of unsustainable eating habits,” he stated.

He went on to acknowledge, “Many ranchers in Colorado care deeply for their land and animals. They are fundamental to our communities. These folks are my friends and neighbors.”

The 8th District is significant, being the leading beef and dairy producer in Colorado, responsible for a notable share of the state’s agricultural output. A large portion of its land—about 75% of 2.5 million acres—is dedicated to agriculture and livestock.

In response to Lutinel’s stance, Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft remarked, “Manny Without Meat makes PETA seem moderate, suggesting Coloradans should forage like cavemen. It’s hard to imagine the ranching community embracing a vegan agenda, which raises questions about Lutinel’s mindset.”

Despite his recent change of heart, some debate remains about his ideal vision for the future of ranching in Colorado. A reflection from his youth, where he promoted veganism at an Earth Day event, could suggest that his approach may still lean towards reduced reliance on animal products.

Citing a report advocating a shift away from animal-based foods, Lutinel noted, “This shift could have significant health benefits for consumers, and it’s one necessary for environmental progress.”

In the past, while serving as a state legislator, Lutinel championed a fur ban in Denver, highlighting the strong environmental sentiments he has maintained. He even initiated a petition to encourage Popeyes to introduce plant-based options during the pandemic, framing it as a measure to protect workers.

Additionally, Lutinel founded Climate Refarm, an organization dedicated to promoting plant-based dietary shifts as a means of combating climate change. Their mission emphasizes the importance of transforming food systems to reduce carbon emissions.

Currently, Lutinel’s campaign has not clarified whether it perceives climate change reforms require adjustments within the agricultural sector. With the primary behind him, he is set to face Evans in the general election on November 3, 2026.
