Many Dems Want ‘A Lot’ of Illegal Immigrants to Stay

On News Nation’s “Cuomo” broadcast on Thursday, Representative Adam Smith (D-WA) said one of the things that prevents Congress from passing laws that include stronger border security is, “I believe we believe there are many people in this country. We have been dependent on their labour for decades, and we can send them back to countries that we don’t believe they’re wrong.”

Smith began by saying that legitimate deportation procedures were required to ensure that people were not accidentally deported, and that the Trump administration was against the Supreme Court.

Then he said, “[W]E did a poor job of securing borders, particularly through asylum law. I don’t necessarily agree with everything Mr. Homan said there, but certainly, asylum law was wide open and people took advantage of it. And President Biden did not do enough to secure the border. As for the big question of what Congress wants to do, the question is that they can’t get compromises and tough on the border, but Donald Trump blocks refugees and strips them of temporary protection.[ed] Status, and many of us believe there are many people in this country. They were an important part of our economy. They are an important part of our community. They are husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, work, paying taxes. We have been dependent on their labor for decades, torn those families apart, and in many cases we have been able to send them back to a country that we don’t even know they’re wrong. So Democrats want a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and many of us are wide open to talking about strengthening asylum laws and reaching greater security. But being unable to compromise on that issue is the biggest blocking Congressional performance. ”
