Many Flights Delayed at Atlanta Airport on Mother’s Day Because of Runway Equipment Problem

Flight Delays Impact Atlanta and Newark Airports

On Mother’s Day, hundreds of flights were delayed at one of Atlanta’s busiest airports due to issues with runway equipment, according to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials.

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, more than 200 departures and over 250 incoming flights were affected, as reported by FlightAware.

“The download issues with equipment at ATL’s air traffic control towers caused significant delays for both arriving and departing flights,” noted an FAA spokesperson.

To manage congestion, the FAA has implemented ground delays, affecting the flow of aircraft within the airport.

A Delta representative corroborated the ground delays, stating: “These measures are in place to ensure smooth operations, given the high volume of flights at the airport.”

Newark Airport also experienced significant delays on Sunday due to telecommunication problems stemming from Philadelphia’s Tracon Area C.

“The FAA has temporarily slowed down operations both within and outside Newark, ensuring that systems function as intended,” the spokesperson added.

These communication issues resulted in nearly 80 flight cancellations and an additional 60 delays at Newark International Airport.

This incident follows a radar and radio outage from Friday, and similar problems were reported at the end of the previous month. As a response, Transport Secretary Shawn Hudy plans to reduce flight capacities at Newark.

“In the coming weeks, we’ll be cutting back on flight volumes at Newark,” he stated. “We’re organizing meetings with all airlines servicing the airport to discuss how they can adjust their schedules.”
