Impeachment Articles Proposed Against DHS Secretary Kristi Noem
Over 50 House Democrats are backing articles of impeachment against Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security. According to Rep. Robin Kelly’s office from Illinois, as of Wednesday, 67 co-sponsors have signed the bill.
Axios was the first to report the number of co-sponsors just this Tuesday.
Last week, Kelly expressed his intention to impeach Noem after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, who allegedly hit the officer with her car.
Kelly is pursuing three articles of impeachment against Noem for what he cites as obstruction of Congress, violations of public trust, and using her position for personal gain.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security responded, criticizing the impeachment effort as “foolishness during a serious time.” They pointed out the significant increase in assaults against ICE agents and claimed that Kelly seems more focused on publicity stunts rather than on addressing crime in Chicago.
On the House floor, Kelly stated that Noem “needs to be held accountable for terrorizing our community.”
Noem has dismissed the impeachment push. During an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures,” she reaffirmed her commitment to her role, emphasizing the administration’s focus on enforcing laws and prioritizing the safety of Americans.
She remarked that the goal has always been to ensure no one is above the law, asserting that her department is committed to bringing justice to criminals and undocumented individuals in the country.
