Many Individuals Live in Fear

Diego Luna Critiques Trump’s Immigration Policies

Actor and director Diego Luna recently voiced his concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, expressing that “too many people live in fear.” He passionately addressed the topic during Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Luna kicked off his monologue by sharing his disbelief over how someone like Trump could attain such power. He questioned how hateful rhetoric could be prevalent in a nation traditionally known for its welcoming nature.

As he elaborated on Trump’s immigration policies, Luna noted that many feel persecuted today. “I’m afraid for those who dread taking their kids to school or simply earning an honest living,” he said, pointing out that these individuals are often neighbors or friends.

Reflecting on the country’s history, Luna asserted that migrants have played crucial roles during difficult times. He mentioned his experience working alongside undocumented individuals in various sectors, including construction and hospitality.

Luna also expressed concern that Trump’s immigration stance might inadvertently impact legal immigration. He pointed out that undocumented immigrants contribute significantly to tax revenues, stating that in 2022, they contributed approximately $96.7 billion in taxes, a fact he believed the Trump administration overlooks.

While it’s true that illegal immigrants pay taxes, there’s an ongoing debate about whether their overall economic impact is beneficial. The financial burden, often cited by some groups, suggests that the costs associated with illegal immigration can exceed their tax contributions.

During his conversation with Kimmel, Luna expressed empathy for undocumented immigrants, emphasizing that they “need to know that they’re not alone.” He described recent times as dark, condemning family separations and the climate of violence and fear.

In response, Tom Homan from the Trump administration countered that their policies are not about separating families. He clarified that legal actions around immigration continue to hold weight and that families of U.S. citizens should not face deportation due to circumstances outside their control.

Luna concluded his remarks by emphasizing the importance of providing a pathway to legal status for undocumented immigrants, stating that they deserve to be welcomed. He encouraged listeners to reach out to their representatives to express their views on the matter.
