Rare Cuckoo Bird Draws Birdwatchers to Long Island

Bird enthusiasts couldn’t believe their luck when a golfer spotted an unusual cuckoo bird, leading to a surge of visitors in Long Island.

Starting Thursday, numerous individuals from various states flocked to Vineyards Golf and Country Club in Riverhead, hoping for a glimpse of this rare bird. The discovery was made by Roy William Gardner, who noticed the cuckoo while driving a golf cart.

Cuckoos are exceptionally rare in the continental U.S., with only four recorded instances in history, as they are primarily found in Europe and typically winter in Africa.

After seeing the bird, Gardner shared a photo with his nephew, an ornithologist at Cornell who is now at UCLA. “It’s impressive that my uncle, who isn’t really into birds, can send text messages across the country,” commented Christopher Sayers, his nephew.

Experts from UCLA and Cornell promptly identified the bird. Gardner recounted how his nephew described the sighting as a “lifer,” saying, “You could go your whole life without seeing this.”

As news of the cuckoo spread in online birdwatching communities, the influx of bird lovers began. Reports indicate that at least 213 cuckoo sightings have been logged on birding platforms since the discovery.

Jay Rand, a local bird and insect enthusiast who rushed to the scene, speculated that the cuckoo might have been attempting to migrate when it was affected by the recent nor’easter.

Many local farms and golf courses extended their hospitality to birdwatchers eager to spot this extraordinary bird. “This is an incredible find,” one enthusiastic birdwatcher said.
