Tragic Flooding in Northern India
At least four people have lost their lives, and nearly 100 are reported missing following devastating floods in the small riverside village of Darari in northern India on Tuesday.
The calamity was triggered by what’s known as a “cloud burst,” a phenomenon involving a sudden and intense downpour in a localized area. Such occurrences aren’t uncommon in the hilly regions of the Himalayas. The steep terrain can lead to a frightening rush of water that engulfs low-lying areas without warning.
Darari, which is near a military camp, suffered significantly as various buildings were swept away into the river. Unfortunately, the army camp itself was also hit by a landslide. The floodwaters surged due to an unexpected influx of rainfall, complicating the efforts of rescuers on the ground.
“There are many guesthouses, restaurants, and hotels in the area; we’ve called on the Army to assist with rescue operations as soon as possible,” stated Prashant Alia, the District Magistrate of Uttarakhand. He emphasized how the entire region was impacted by the disaster, noting reports of multiple landslides following the initial incident.
“The main roads are heavily affected by landslides in several areas,” Alia remarked. “Carrying out rescue operations and getting back to normal will be immensely difficult as the weather continues to worsen.”
According to Dami, rescue teams have been deployed using “war scaffolding,” doing everything feasible to save lives and provide aid.
Disaster management officials mentioned a glimmer of hope amid the chaos, as many residents were reportedly safe at a fair when the floods struck.
The unfavorable weather and continuous flooding have hindered the recovery of deceased individuals. As of Wednesday, local officials indicated that four bodies had been retrieved, while many more might be trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings. Additionally, an army camp reported that 11 soldiers were missing.
Dami noted that approximately 130 individuals were rescued alive from the ruins of Darari on Tuesday night.
“There was literally nothing anyone could do,” local politician Rokendra Bisht commented. “The entire village of Darari has been completely obliterated.”
On the same day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Dami, expressed condolences for those affected by the flash floods. “The state government is ensuring that rescue and relief teams are making every possible effort to help the people. No stone is being left unturned,” he said.
