On Fox News Channel's “The Story” on Wednesday, host Martha MacCallum argued that many Republicans disagree with vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) on the Ukraine issue.
“There was some substance last night on the foreign policy side, but on Ukraine, there are plenty of conservatives and Republicans who don't agree with you on this issue, and now President Zelensky is urging Russia to lift the restraints on how they can use these weapons, these missiles, in terms of how deeply they can use them,” McCallum said.
She asked, “A lot of Republicans and conservatives support this. They are worried that this is a Hitler-like situation in World War II and that it will spread Hitler's power across Europe. Why don't we stop that from happening and help Ukraine succeed in its mission?”
Vance said, “Well, of course, I don't think Russia should have invaded Ukraine. But President Trump has said it's in our best interest, in Ukraine's best interest, to stop the carnage. So we need to pressure Russia, and frankly the Europeans, to come to the negotiating table and end the conflict. We have to ask ourselves, what is Ukraine going to accomplish with more fighting? What are the risks of escalation? Are we sleepwalking into World War III, with Vice President Kamala Harris and President Biden, who doesn't know where he is? We've got to have strong leadership. But we have to recognize that while we're in this situation, what's best for Ukraine and for our country is to de-escalate tensions and bring peace to the region. And, by the way, Donald Trump has done this in the past. This isn't an abstract thing. He can bring peace. He just has to get back in the Oval Office.”
