Brawl Erupts at North Jersey Mall
On Saturday night, a large group of young people gathered at the North Jersey Mall, resulting in chaos and arrests.
The disturbance started after a TikTok post encouraged attendees to meet at the Menlo Park Mall in Edison, New Jersey. Mayor Sam Joshi noted that the crowd swelled from about 100 to more than 300 youths, all drawn from various parts of the state, particularly by 8 PM.
Police reported that at least four of the seven minors arrested were from locations outside of Edison.
To manage the situation, Edison police called for assistance from neighboring departments. Reports indicate that one officer sustained an ankle injury while attempting to control the escalating crowd.
Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the youths, and officials did not recover any weapons during the incident.
From the seven arrests, one individual faces charges for aggravated assault on a police officer, while the others are charged with disorderly conduct. Additionally, one person also faces charges for resisting arrest.
Some of the youths responsible for the gathering shared posts across TikTok and Instagram, urging others to join them at the mall by 7 PM.
It’s uncertain if the posts were intended to incite a fight or if the goal was simply to gather, but police chief Tom Bryan confirmed that social media played a significant role in attracting the large crowd.
One TikTok post promoted the meetup with the title “Menlo Mall Link Up??,” which gained over 9,000 likes and amassed 156,000 views. Users continued to share information about the event in the days leading up to it.
A video capturing the chaotic scene quickly went viral, showing teens running from police and creating a general uproar.
This incident follows similar events, including last October’s “Mass Chaos” at King’s Dominion theme park in Virginia, where a social media call led to a large gathering but no arrests were made. In another case in November, a fight involving an armed teen created panic at a mall on Long Island, highlighting ongoing concerns about youth gatherings fueled by social media.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the Edison Police Station were made.
