Somali Community in Minnesota Faces Accusations Amid Fraud Allegations
During a segment on “Morning Joe,” analyst Mara Gay stated that Somalis in Minnesota are being unfairly targeted as “scapegoats” in light of reports claiming they have misappropriated billions in social services. Federal investigations suggest that over $9 billion may have been fraudulently obtained, mainly impacting the Somali community.
Gay pointed out that the focus is disproportionately on the fraud scandal involving Somalis while many other similar issues occur across the country. “Let’s remember that there are scandals in other states, too,” she remarked, suggesting that the attention given to this situation might have political undertones. She also mentioned that it could be influenced by perceptions linked to appearances, as they resemble each other.
Continuing, Gay said, “And that community is being scapegoated in ways that certainly serve the far right,” labeling the phenomenon as inappropriate. This perspective raises questions about broader social narratives and their impact on communities.
In Minnesota, 92 individuals have been charged in connection with a scheme accused of stealing around $350 million from a federal child nutrition program operated by the nonprofit Feeding Our Future. A video by YouTuber Nick Shirley highlighted that some suspect child care centers, said to be Somali-run and funded heavily by taxpayer dollars, were found empty.
The FBI has stepped up efforts in Minnesota, with Director Kash Patel reporting that additional personnel are being deployed to address these fraud schemes. The agency recently uncovered a $250 million operation that diverted essential food aid during the pandemic.
Some political leaders, including Democratic Governor Tim Walz, have come to the defense of the Somali community. Walz criticized white men in response to inquiries about Somali involvement in crime, prompting accusations from some state officials that he retaliated against whistleblowers who pointed out the ongoing fraud.
Representative Ilhan Omar has accused certain public figures, including former President Trump, of fostering anti-immigrant sentiments through their critiques of Somalis. Similarly, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu stated that Somalis contribute significantly to the city’s achievements.
