Marc Jacobs offers to style accused killer Luigi Mangione for his trial.

Marc Jacobs Open to Styling Assassin Luigi Mangione

In an interview, renowned fashion designer Marc Jacobs expressed willingness to style Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, during his upcoming trial. Interestingly, he noted that Mangione has been quite the “trendsetter” lately, dressed to the nines, despite the serious nature of his circumstances.

On the Vanity Fair podcast “The Lie Detector Test,” the host mentioned how stars like Winona Ryder and Courtney Love donned Jacobs’ creations in court back in the early 2000s. A photo of Mangione was presented, prompting the question, “Could you style this person for the trial?” Jacobs, wearing a casual black Lacoste shirt, chuckled and replied, “Hmm… yeah.”

Trial Delayed Over Double Jeopardy Issues

Currently, Mangione’s trial for the murder of Thompson has been postponed until December due to concerns about double jeopardy. “I actually think his outfit is very nice,” Jacobs remarked, pointing out how trial fashion can attract significant attention—dating back to the highly publicized O.J. Simpson trial in the mid-90s.

Donna Rotunno, a criminal defense attorney and Fox News contributor, mentioned how the media’s portrayal of Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark during the Simpson case influenced courtroom fashion choices. She expressed concern, saying it’s disheartening to see people supporting a confessed killer like Mangione.

After stalking Thompson and shooting him in the back on December 4, 2024, Mangione’s bold fashion choices have drawn media attention. In March, he appeared in court sporting loafers without socks, leading to a photographer capturing his bare ankles in shackles—a striking image that went viral.

Rotunno lamented, “I think it’s sad… It’s sad that designers want to support it in any way possible.” She highlighted how Mangione’s fashion choices have been discussed since he allegedly discarded a luxury backpack while fleeing the scene of the crime.

The attorney noted that many have found a certain notoriety in Mangione, which feels troubling. His case has drawn public fascination, and even sparked discussions about his appearance in court. For example, he made headlines in February when he was discovered with smuggled banknotes hidden in his socks, reportedly addressed to someone named “Joan.” Although the notes were confiscated, court officials allowed him to wear socks, though he opted to take off his shoes, citing appearance concerns.

Following recent developments, Mangione, having pleaded guilty to federal charges, could be facing life in prison. His state trial might not even occur if double jeopardy claims succeed. Federal guidelines suggest a sentencing of 25 to 30 years, but the judge has discretion over the final sentence.

Rotunno pointed out the insensitivity of designers eager to dress someone like Mangione, suggesting that such choices could sway public perception. “Maybe they dressed up Luigi Mangione so much that people lost some of the sympathy they had for him,” she added, highlighting the complexities of courtroom appearances.

During the podcast, Jacobs was asked about the impact of Mangione’s recent court attire. After Mangione wore a trendy red sweater, it sold out at Nordstrom—leading to the question of whether it would boost his status as a trendsetter. Jacobs, somewhat amused, agreed, “Yeah.”

The conversation also turned towards whether Jacobs felt disappointment over Gwyneth Paltrow not wearing his design during her own high-profile trial in 2023. His response was simply a firm “No,” indicating perhaps his focus lies elsewhere—or maybe he has his own perspectives on celebrity fashion choices.

Interestingly, Jacobs underwent a lie detector test during the interview, affirming his candid approach. As for a direct comment from his team, a spokesperson did not respond to inquiries following the discussion.
