March Madness: Maryland’s buzzer-beating shot comes into question

Derrick Queen gave the Maryland Terrapins men's basketball program something to cheer on Sunday night when his buzzer-stabbing bank shot won a March Madness Game with the Colorado Rams.

Queens Fade Way Jumper gave Terrapin a 72-71 victory over time. It is the first time that Terrapin has reached the Sweet 16 since 2016, and the first under head coach Kevin Willard.

A drive to the left side of the floor and subsequent pro hops gave the Queen the best chance to put the ball into the basket. However, lane's steps became a source of controversy on social media.

College basketball fans believed the Queen had escaped on a walk.

The Queen scored 17 points in the victory.

“When my coach wrote the play, he trusted me and my teammates trusted me,” Queen said. “I was a little nervous, but I was one plan and I had to make this.”

Willard said the Queen wanted the ball and he drew a play for him.

“Sometimes you can create something for guys who don't want basketball,” Willard said. “So, if he said that, it was a very simple decision and I was sure he wanted basketball, so I could see everyone's body language rise a bit.

“It was just a simple zipper. Give him a basketball and let him go to work.”
