Rubio Advocates for Free Elections in Venezuela

Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a meeting with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado on Tuesday, emphasizing the need for free elections in Venezuela.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” that same evening, Rubio proposed a three-part plan for Venezuela’s future, as noted in Department of State Records.

“There will eventually need to be a transition phase,” Rubio mentioned to host Sean Hannity. “Free and fair elections are essential for Venezuela, and we must reach that point.” He stated that while the initial stabilization phase of recovery had mostly been achieved, the country was now moving forward, with Venezuelan oil being redirected to U.S. refineries and oil revenues entering U.S. Treasury-controlled accounts.

The conversation at the State Department revolved around rebuilding democratic institutions in Venezuela. Reports indicated that discussions touched on upcoming elections, restructuring the government, and attracting foreign investments. Machado described the meeting on social media as “amazing,” expressing gratitude to Rubio for his commitment to democracy and the welfare of the Venezuelan people.

Machado’s political party, Vente Venezuela, mentioned that she plans to head back home “in the coming days,” though no specific date has been set. Sources close to her noted that the discussions also involved ensuring safe passage for Machado and other political asylum seekers.

This meeting was significant considering Machado’s complicated relationship with the Trump administration. Reportedly, Rubio had advised Trump against supporting Machado after Maduro’s arrest earlier this year, suggesting it might create further instability in Venezuela. Reports also indicated a CIA assessment influenced the decision to install Delcy Rodriguez in Trump’s stead.

Regardless, Machado remains a popular figure in Venezuela. A recent survey showed that 67 percent of respondents would choose her as their candidate, while only 25 percent favored Rodriguez.

On another note, the Trump administration briefly detained Rodriguez as federal prosecutors in Miami pursued corruption and money laundering charges against her in March to ensure alignment with U.S. demands.

“We need to be patient, but we also can’t afford to be complacent,” Rubio remarked during his Fox News appearance.

The U.S. State Department was contacted for comments but did not respond before publication.
