Sanctions Imposed on UN Rapporteur for Palestine Rights
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced sanctions against Francesca Albanese, the UN rapporteur on Palestinian rights, following a request from the US for her dismissal. Rubio labeled her actions as promoting “toxic anti-Semitism and support for terrorism.”
Albanese, an Italian-born advocate, has held the rapporteur position since 2022. Rubio accused her of encouraging the International Criminal Court (ICC) to take actions against the US and Israel.
In his statement on X, Rubio declared, “Today, I am imposing sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her shameful efforts and urging the ICC to act against American and Israeli officials, businesses, and executives.” He emphasized that Albanese’s political campaign against the US and Israel would not be tolerated, reaffirming support for allies’ rights to self-defense.
This announcement came amidst comments made by Albanese, who has faced criticism for her controversial statements regarding Israel. Last month, the Trump administration had urged UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to remove her from the position, accusing her of using inflammatory rhetoric against American businesses.
Albanese’s previous letters contained serious allegations, claiming that actions by the US and Israel amounted to “total human rights violations” and even “genocide.” She insisted that recipients of her communications could face criminal liability if they continued their activities related to Israel.
A spokesperson for Guterres noted that he lacks the authority to hire or fire rapporteurs, adding another layer to the already complex situation.
Albanese has also authored a UN report indicating that technologies from companies like Google are benefitting from what she described as genocidal actions in Gaza. Her initiatives often criticize Israel while contextualizing serious attacks by Hamas within a broader history of Palestinian oppression.
In a past statement, she echoed sentiments from journalist Chris Hedges, asserting that the Israeli lobby influences Congress. She has made comparisons of Israeli policies to those of Nazi Germany, escalating the tension surrounding her remarks.
Rubio reiterated the US’s commitment to take necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty and allies. The timing of these sanctions aligns with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the US, receiving support from both President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress.
During her tenure, Albanese expressed her disapproval of countries that provided airspace for Netanyahu’s travel, highlighting the implications of such actions under international law.
The post reached out to Albanese for her comments on these developments.
