Rubio Labels House Hearing a “Circus” Over Footwear Exchange
During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Secretary of State Marco Rubio dismissed the proceedings as a “circus” after Rep. Sarah Jacobs, a Democrat from California, brought up a pair of shoes she had received as a gift from former President Donald Trump.
This unusual exchange occurred while Jacobs was criticizing Rubio’s remarks on the recent tensions with Iran, suggesting he was reluctant to acknowledge the reality of the situation.
“Mr. Secretary, it seems like you have an issue with acknowledging the facts… that the shoes the president bought you were, well, too big,” she remarked, leaving Rubio looking a bit confused.
“I don’t know what she means by shoes. Trump gave me Florsheim shoes, which are actually quite nice and fit well, but I’m not sure what she’s on about,” Rubio responded.
Jacobs tried to pivot back to the theme by complimenting Rubio’s footwear later in the hearing, saying, “Your shoes are really nice today, Mr. Secretary.”
Rubio shot back, “What are we doing here? Are we really talking about shoes? Is this the Foreign Affairs Committee or some kind of circus?”
The hearing turned heated as Democratic representatives pressed Rubio on various points regarding the Trump administration’s foreign policy, including military actions against Iran. Rep. Gregory Meeks from New York even questioned if Trump’s private financial interests played a role in his decisions about military engagement.
Rubio firmly rebutted the notion, stating, “To be clear, the president has never once, not even for a second, linked his personal finances or any public policies to military actions,” adding that he had attended nearly all of Trump’s foreign policy meetings.
Frustration mounted for Rubio as Democrats continued to challenge him on Trump’s finances and alleged corruption, prompting him to express discontent about the hearing format. “This isn’t a proper hearing if I only get five minutes to respond to questions,” Rubio pointed out, feeling overwhelmed by the rapid-fire exchanges.
He even sarcastically questioned, “Is this a dunk tank? Seriously?” as he struggled to keep up amidst the interruptions.
