Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for secretary of state, denounced the “liberal world order” that has permeated our nation's foreign policy since the Cold War.
During the hearing, Mr. Rubio criticized the globalist worldview, which he says has plunged Western countries into great instability. As a result of this “liberal world order,” Western countries have endured disastrous trade policies and destabilizing levels of mass immigration.
“Governments in Western countries are censoring and even prosecuting domestic political opponents, while radical jihadists openly march through the streets and ram their vehicles into civilians.”
“Bipartisan consensus has emerged from the triumphalism that ended the long Cold War,'' Rubio said. said. “And this agreement is that we have reached the end of history and that countries around the world will now be part of a community similar to the Western world, and that a foreign policy that serves the national interest will supersede a foreign policy that serves the national interest. The liberal world order was now destined to give up national sovereignty and national identity and instead become one human family and global citizenry.
“This wasn't just a fantasy,” Rubio added. “That was a dangerous delusion.”
As a result, this “dangerous delusion” has thrown many counties in the West, including the United States, into turmoil.
“Here in the United States, an almost religious commitment to free and unfettered trade at the expense of the national economy has shrunk the middle class, imperiled the working class, disrupted industrial capacity, and destroyed vital supplies. “We're pushing the chain into the hands of our adversaries,” Rubio said. “The irrational zeal to maximize the freedom of movement of people has led to a historic mass migration crisis that threatens the stability of societies and governments.”
“Governments in Western countries are censoring and even prosecuting their domestic political opponents,” Rubio added. “Meanwhile, radical jihadists are openly marching in the streets and ramming our people with vehicles.”
Rubio also mentioned the conflict between Ukraine and Russia that erupted during President Joe Biden's administration in 2022. Mr. Rubio, like Mr. Trump, promised to work toward an end to the war and demanded concessions from both sides.
Rubio: 'That's unacceptable' said. “This war must end. Not only Russia, but also the Ukrainians will have to make concessions.”
