Marcus Freeman from Notre Dame decides on NFL opportunity

Marcus Freeman to Continue at Notre Dame Through 2026

Marcus Freeman, the head coach of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team, announced on Monday that he will end any potential NFL career plans and return to the program in 2026. He shared this decision in a post on X.

In his message, Freeman simply stated, “2026…undo. Go to Ireland.” This indicates his commitment to the team for the next few years.

Speculation about Freeman potentially moving to the NFL has been circulating since last season, particularly as the Chicago Bears were searching for a new head coach. His name was even connected to the New York Giants, who will be looking for a head coach after their upcoming Week 18 matchup.

The conversation around his potential move increased after Notre Dame was knocked out of the College Football Playoff and chose not to participate in bowl games. With only one week left in the NFL’s regular season, teams will soon start making decisions regarding head coaching roles, raising further questions about Freeman’s future.

He touched on the subject in a previous discussion, suggesting he remains focused on his current role. He recognizes the team’s needs, saying, “We must think in the moment about the value of the opportunities we have.” This awareness, he added, helps avoid distractions from external noise.

Freeman has a deep respect for the Giants, noting their historical significance in the NFL, but he also emphasizes gratitude for being in his current position. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the people—our success is not just accidental,” he remarked.

As he looks ahead, Freeman’s primary goal remains clear: to get Notre Dame back into national championship contention.
