Marcus Freeman Charged with Assault
Notre Dame’s football coach, Marcus Freeman, was recently charged with assault following an incident reported by a high school wrestling coach in Indiana. This comes after Freeman attended the Al Smith Wrestling Invitational to support his son, Vinny, who competes for Penn High School.
According to the report, there was some physical contact involving Freeman’s son after he lost a match, leading to alleged exchanges between Freeman and New Prairie High School’s assistant wrestling coach, Chris Freeger, as they exited the gym. It was also mentioned that Freeman’s wife, Joanna, got into an argument with Freeger before police stepped in.
In a statement released Sunday, Notre Dame stood by Freeman. They stated that “Vinnie Freeman was verbally abused by a local wrestling coach during and after a wrestling match,” and that Marcus and Joanna Freeman intervened to remove their son from the situation.
Freeman’s team insisted that he did not engage physically with anyone at any point during this incident. They believe that the video evidence will clear him of these claims, suggesting the allegations are baseless.
The Mishawaka police are currently investigating, but any decision on charges will be left to the prosecutors, as reported.
Despite this turmoil, Freeman is anticipated to continue as coach for the Fighting Irish in the upcoming season. Interestingly, he’s been a target for several NFL teams recently, which adds an intriguing layer to his future in college football.
Last season, Freeman’s team finished with a solid 10-2 record but just missed out on a spot in the College Football Playoff.
