Marcus Spears has great comparison for Bill Belichick not getting Falcons job

Bill Belichick likely won't get a head coaching opportunity in 2024 after the Falcons hire Raheem Morris, and for ESPN NFL analyst Marcus Spears, that means someone might be thinking, “When are you going to the club?” It's like coming to terms with, “Is it time to stop?''

“We love going out, right? It was really beautiful,” Spears, a former defensive end, said Friday on ESPN's “NFL Live.” “We went in there and bought a table and had our drinks served with all the glitter that came out of it. They looked at us like, 'Who's spending all that money at that party?' Everyone would be watching. And everyone would want to be part of your VIP section. And you would grow old.

“When you turn 40 and walk into a club, you look around and wonder what all these young kids are doing?” i can't believe. That's it. I thought Bill Belichick would interview these teams, but he was completely wrong about that. ”

The Falcons were the only team to interview the former Patriots head coach, but when Atlanta brought him back a second time, and according to reports, owner Arthur Blank selected Belichick to replace Arthur Smith. That's what Belichick seemed to think when he “desperately” wanted it. has become a favorite.

But the Falcons interviewed 15 candidates for the vacancy, ranging from experienced head coaches like Mike Vrabel and Jim Harbaugh to up-and-coming coordinators like Brian Johnson and Ben Johnson.

But the outlier on that list was Belichick, 71, who led the Patriots dynasty for 24 seasons and won six Super Bowls.

After Tom Brady left for the Buccaneers, the Patriots went 22-29, including a dismal 4-13 in the 2023 season with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe at quarterback.

They finished the regular season tied with the Panthers for the fewest points per game (13.9 points), which was a significant decrease from their 21.4 points per game average in 2022.

Belichick and owner Robert Kraft mutually agreed to part ways after the season, and the Patriots promoted linebackers coach Jerod Mayo to replace Belichick.

The Falcons have hired Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris as their new head coach. AP

Initially, Belichick's name, along with his resume, surfaced in Cowboys rumors before Jerry Jones decided to keep Mike McCarthy.

And more specifically, although the team has struggled under Smith, they have the No. 8 overall pick and could select a quarterback to pair with running back Bijan Robinson and tight end Kyle Pitts. He materialized as an option for the Falcons.

But Belichick's outlook changed when Atlanta selected Morris, the Rams' defensive coordinator who had served as head coach of the Buccaneers and interim coach of the Falcons, and perhaps a new role for Belichick in light of his final years with the Patriots. Reality has also changed. It started to settle into position.

“It's true that he's not focused on offense,” Spears said in a segment on “NFL Live.” He was a bad hire. It was a bad draft pick. And in a league where sometimes you have to score 30 or 40 points to win a game, they haven't had success on the offensive side of the football. ”
