Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2026

The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame is preparing to honor its Class of 2026, celebrating the remarkable athletes of Long Island who shine both on the playing field and off.

Chris Vaccaro, the hall’s president, shared with the Post that these induction ceremonies serve as a reminder that true greatness often emerges not from grand arenas but from local gyms and community support.

On May 21, a special event will take place at Flower Field in St. James, recognizing former Yankees and Mets player Marcus Stroman. Interestingly, his younger brother, Jaden, just finished his senior season with the Patchogue-Medford baseball team.

Additionally, Keith Kincaid, a former goaltender for the Rangers and Devils from Farmingville, and Nina Kuszyk, a Northport runner, are among the inductees. Kuszyk will be honored posthumously; she was the first female champion of the Boston Marathon and completed over 80 marathons in her lifetime before passing away in June at 86.

Also included in the Class of 2026 is Alan Hearn from MSG Network, who hails from Holbrook and attended St. Anthony High School, along with several others.

The Hall has exciting plans to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in collaboration with local athletics. They will also pay tribute to Horace J. McGarity, a Babylon-born World War II veteran who helped popularize baseball in Italy during the post-war 1950s.

Islanders Embrace Unexpected Guests

In a light-hearted moment, the Islanders had an amusing encounter with a few birds that made an entrance during Tuesday night’s thrilling 5-4 overtime win against the Penguins, where fans sported “Rally Bird” T-shirts.

A fortunate shot hit forward Bo Horvat at the back of the net just before the puck was moved late in the first period, which set up a goal for Matthew Schaefer and put the team ahead 2-1.

“Poor guy,” Horvat remarked from the bench.

The bird was expected to be penalized for interference but was safely released into the wilderness after the game.

This inspired merchandise will be available starting February 12 at the Isles’ East Meadow Practice Facility in the team’s pro shop located at the Northwell Health Ice Center.
