Margaret Brennan Questions Democrat Rep Jason Crow On His Continued Support for the Shutdown Despite Its Impact on His Own Constituents

Government Shutdown Debate Heats Up

On Sunday, CBS News host Margaret Brennan challenged Democratic Representative Jason Crow from Colorado about his party’s ongoing support for a partial government shutdown, which many believe is negatively affecting voters.

During his appearance on “Face the Nation,” Brennan questioned Crow about how Democratic lawmakers justify the shutdown of key agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). She noted this deadlock is especially detrimental to local communities. Crow immediately pointed fingers at Republicans, asserting that nearly all Senate Democrats had voted for a funding extension just days prior—though this claim seemed to raise some skepticism from Brennan.

“As a Democrat, how can you defend this? Congress is set to take a break soon, and a lot of TSA workers aren’t receiving their paychecks because of cuts linked to immigration policy changes led by your party. It seems like the White House hasn’t budged at all in negotiations. Look at the Denver airport, right in your district. TSA employees are asking travelers for gift cards to help make ends meet, and that airport is vital for the community,” Brennan pressed Crow.

“This is damaging your community. How can you justify this situation?” she asked again.

In response, Crow insisted, “Let me be clear: this shutdown is caused by the Republicans. A complete shutdown.”

As Crow continued, he referenced a recent Senate vote where Democrats had proposed funding for everything except Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), saying Republicans unanimously opposed it.

He highlighted a bill backed by Democratic representatives that aims to fund DHS while excluding the two immigration agencies, claiming, “Republicans are blocking it and not even allowing it to come to a vote.” He failed to mention, though, that Senate Democrats have, for the most part, rejected Republican proposals to fully reopen DHS.

Brennan then tried to steer the conversation back to the immediate impact of the shutdown, particularly regarding TSA employees who are facing financial difficulties. “With spring break approaching, high traffic seasons are on the horizon, and these workers are left in limbo,” she remarked.

Crow reiterated, “It’s the Republican Party that controls this situation. They manage what passes and what doesn’t. We’re saying, ‘Let’s take it back.’ We need to fund critical agencies like the Coast Guard, FEMA, TSA, and cybersecurity, especially with tensions rising due to a new conflict with Iran.”

He concluded, “We’re willing to fund these agencies and will vote tomorrow. They’re preventing that vote. They’re instigating this shutdown,” wrapping up the segment. Crow has gained attention in the past over a controversial video where he and five other Democratic congressmen urged military officials to defy orders from the Trump administration, prompting some Republicans to label them the “Seditious Six.”

In a previous interview, Crow alluded to the notion of using a government shutdown to curb ICE operations, following a recent incident involving an ICE agent’s use of force resulting in a fatality. Meanwhile, Tom Homan, the former head of border security under Trump, commented on CNN that the current shutdown is not primarily about immigration policies, but rather their execution.
