Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Maria Colina Machado
The Nobel Committee has bestowed this year’s Peace Prize upon Maria Colina Machado. This decision comes amidst increasing discussions about President Donald Trump potentially receiving the honor for facilitating a significant agreement between Israel and Hamas.
Since returning to office, Trump has been put forward for the prize by various prominent figures. However, the committee had set its nomination deadline for January 31, which means he might be a contender for next year’s award.
Some analyses suggest that Trump’s involvement in the Middle East peace deal, if it proves durable, may give him a credible claim to the Nobel. It’s an interesting perspective, right?
During a recent cabinet meeting, Trump was queried about the Nobel Peace Prize but opted not to comment on it. Instead, he discussed the prospect of addressing the Israeli parliament.
Earlier in the week, the Hostage and Missing Families Forum—a group formed after the events of October 7 to voice the concerns of families affected by hostages and terrorism—lodged a formal request with the committee on Trump’s behalf.
In a letter dated October 6, the forum stated, “No leader or organization has done more for global peace in the past year than President Trump. While others might have merely talked about peace, he actually achieved it. He delivered real results that saved numerous lives.” They emphasized how he didn’t just speak of peace; he made it a reality.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had told Trump during a visit to Washington, D.C., in July that he nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize, handing him the letter he sent to the committee. Netanyahu acknowledged Trump’s role in the Abraham Accords, stating, “He has recognized the significant opportunity for peace across different regions.”
While Trump has faced nominations before, he has never won. For instance, U.S. Representative Claudia Tenney nominated him in 2020 for his work on the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and several Arab nations.
If he were to win the prize, Trump would join the ranks of just four other U.S. presidents who have received this honor, including Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson, and Theodore Roosevelt.
