Old Timers’ Day Celebrates Yankees Legacy

Old People’s Day at Yankee Stadium is always a great time, especially for the fans. Honestly, I like playing favorites and reliving the moments from past games.

It’s fascinating to see those classic pinstripes make a comeback, don’t you think? It’s like a nod to the history of the game.

And there could be some real advantages for the current Yankees squad.

Mariano Rivera had plans to chat with Devin Williams on Saturday, as he mentioned before joining the Bronx alumni game.

While he didn’t divulge the specifics of what he wanted to share, he intended to lend his insights.

Rivera, the only Hall of Famer from his first ballot and often cited as perhaps the best closer of all time, certainly had a smooth ride throughout his 19 years in the league. Still, he learned a lot about managing the ups and downs of the game, especially when it comes to closing.

“Forget that,” Rivera said, dismissing the idea of letting struggles like blown saves weigh him down. “You can’t change what’s happened. Just keep your head up and focus on being confident. If you’re not confident in yourself, then, well, why even play?”

On the other hand, Williams admitted that his confidence wasn’t quite at its peak.

Williams, a two-time All-Star with the Brewers, has been one of the stronger arms in the game, but lately, his numbers haven’t reflected that. He carries a 5.73 ERA and has struggled in his past five outings.

In a recent 5-3 defeat against the Astros, he gave up three runs (two earned) in ten innings.

“Whenever Mo is here, it’s not just beneficial for the bullpen but for everyone. His wisdom is invaluable,” manager Aaron Boone stated before the Astros game. “What Mariano excelled at was not letting yesterday’s performance get to him.”

Boone wants to create a less pressured environment for Williams to help him get his confidence back. “He needs a little positivity,” remarked the veteran Jorge Posada.

“It’s crucial to go through these key situations. Hopefully, he can find his footing again.”
