Grusenkamp Perez Addresses Democratic Socialist Party Wins
When asked about the recent successes of the Democratic Socialist Party, Rep. Marie Grusenkamp Perez (D-Wash.) seemed hesitant and chose not to criticize the party, despite her campaign receiving over $2 million this election cycle through a joint fundraising committee that includes the Washington Democratic Party.
During an interview, host Libby Denkman inquired whether the Democratic Socialist Party’s victories in regions like New York and Seattle signal a ‘departure from the party’ as Grusenkamp Perez’s approach appears to shift away from traditional centrism.
“There’s definitely a distinction to be made between centrists and those who lean in another direction,” Grusenkamp Perez noted, suggesting that her stance resonates with a wide range of voters from different backgrounds.
She expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of politics, reflecting on its decline, “I really don’t like how things have changed over time, and I completely understand the frustration people feel.” Her comments hinted at a shared sense of indignation with many elements of today’s political landscape.
Republicans have used this exchange to question Grusenkamp Perez’s moderate image, highlighting her connections to the Washington Democratic Party and its platform. A spokesperson from the National Republican Congressional Committee labeled her “too afraid to confront the socialist takeover” within the party.
Max LaVey, the campaign manager for her Republican opponent, pointed out issues in her past actions, suggesting she has consistently backed socialist initiatives, including donations to Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign and her involvement with the state Democratic Party’s Executive Committee.
“She hasn’t voiced any opposition to the extreme policies being enacted,” LaVey claimed, warning that if Democrats regain control in Congress, her record indicates a shift toward supporting the Democratic Socialists of America.
According to data compiled during the 2026 election cycle, Grusenkamp Perez’s campaign garnered over $2 million, directed through the MGP Victory Fund, which includes various participants like Marie for Congress and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee.
She has been an active member of the state party’s Executive Committee since 2020, a role that involves overseeing party affairs and policies aligning with their platform, which some view as leaning toward democratic socialism.
The Democratic Party in Washington supports various policies linked to socialist principles, including publicly-funded healthcare and a universal basic income. It has also advocated for significant changes in justice and immigration policies, including calls for the abolishment of ICE and comprehensive reforms in the justice system.
In 2022, Washington’s Democratic platform endorsed the decriminalization of most drugs amid rising concerns over drug-related incidents, like a significant increase in overdose deaths over the last year.
The party has also voiced opposition to specific federal policies, such as the “Remain in Mexico” approach, advocating instead for protections for immigrants and undocumented individuals.
Moreover, the Washington Democratic Party has pushed to further discourage so-called assault weapons, promoting measures for stricter control over firearms.
