Marjorie Taylor Greene expresses regret for being part of 'toxic politics'

Under pressure to respond to threats made against her amid her ongoing clash with former President Donald Trump, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed regret during a CNN interview on Sunday for her involvement in “toxic politics.”

CNN host Dana Bash remarked, “Clearly, any threat to your safety is completely unacceptable. Yet, we’ve observed similar attacks and critiques directed at others by the president before. This isn’t new. To be frank, I’ve never heard you mention this until it affected you.” Greene conceded that the criticism was “fair.”

In a social media post over the weekend, Greene revealed that she has been receiving warnings from a private security firm regarding her safety, stating, “There is a surge of threats against me being inflamed by some of the most powerful figures in the world.”

Later, Greene expressed that engaging in toxic politics is damaging to the country. “I want to sincerely apologize for participating in this. It’s harmful to our nation, something I’ve thought about a lot, particularly after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. We’re accountable for our words and actions,” she noted. “I’ve been actively trying to reduce the political hostility.” She added a plea for kindness among individuals, reflecting that Americans share more in common than they might think.

Bash referenced Greene’s past actions, highlighting troubling posts, including one from 2020 that was deleted, as well as endorsing suggestions that incited violence against socialists and calls for the executions of Nancy Pelosi and former President Obama.

Greene stated, “I addressed this in 2021 and never aimed to harm anyone. I firmly stand by my statements then and now. I believe America needs unity and an end to divisive and toxic rhetoric. I’m trying to set an example, and I hope President Trump can follow suit.”

Recently, Trump labeled Greene a “traitor” and publicly withdrew his support for her. Throughout her time in Congress, Greene has been a staunch ally of Trump, yet she has diverged from him concerning the release of the Epstein files and various foreign policy decisions.
