On Thursday, the US House of Representatives approved a bill that formalizes President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “American Gulf.”
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia stated that her team would promptly initiate the process to change the name. This comes after Trump’s announcement regarding the change a few weeks ago, just before he took office in January.
“Congress needs to take action to ensure that we can fund updates to maps and numerous name changes in areas such as the military and the FAA,” Greene explained.
“That’s absolutely correct. We will always rename the post office here,” Greene added enthusiastically. “I’m sure we will definitely transition from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Let’s go!”
The bill passed in the House with a vote of 211-206, with only Rep. Don Bacon from Nebraska opposing it alongside the Democrats.
“It’s like a childish move,” Bacon commented when asked about the change, expressing his belief that “we are the United States, not a regime from history. I deserve better than this.”
For the bill to advance in the Senate, it will need the support of seven Democrats or independents alongside the Republicans to reach the necessary 60 votes.
