Mark Batterson Discusses His Latest Book 'Gradually Then Suddenly'

Mark Batterson’s Call to Faith in New Book

Mark Batterson, a bestselling author, is encouraging readers to embrace faith once more. He’s often seen as a motivator, pushing his audience not just to recognize their divine calling, but also to take bold steps in faith. His latest book, titled “Gradually and Suddenly,” challenges readers to make that initial leap and let God guide their journey. In a conversation with Crosswalk, Batterson articulates the gradual approach necessary for individuals to listen to God’s guidance and embark on their faith journey, describing it as a process that unfolds both gradually and all at once.

Mark Batterson: Writing a book typically takes me about four months, but I realize I’ve been crafting this one in my mind for 30 years. Honestly, there were times, like a decade or two ago, when I wouldn’t have felt ready to publish it. We’re celebrating 30 years of ministry in the Washington, DC area, and I think, well, now’s a fitting moment to share some thoughts. It’s about how life unfolds, largely gradually before those sudden breakthroughs. That’s how things like revival or miracles occur. Many endeavors, like running a marathon, writing a book, or launching a business, often require that long-term commitment before you see results. This book really emphasizes the importance of long-term vision and faith, and how it ultimately contributes to lasting legacies.

CW: Would you classify this book as part of the prosperity gospel?

MB: If someone is looking for a quick fix to get rich, then they won’t find it here. This book isn’t about that. It’s about playing the long game, which is a healthier approach.

CW: Let’s discuss National Community Church.

MB: Our church grew from 19 to 250 people over five years. Then, on August 12, 2001, an article came out in the Washington Post highlighting our demographics. At the time, 80% of our congregation was single and in their 20s, but after that feature, our numbers doubled almost overnight. It’s fascinating how, just when you think you want to give up, a sudden shift can occur.

CW: What was the process like for you as a writer?

MB: I felt a calling to write when I was 22, but I didn’t actually publish a book until I was 35. Those 13 years were really about holding onto a dream that felt out of reach. It requires courage; I wouldn’t back down out of fear. Daily commitment is essential. I read about 3,000 books before my first publication. It’s all about discipline. You’ll probably overestimate what you can accomplish in a few years, but underestimate the power of what God can do over time. The key is to keep trusting God’s timing while working hard.

CW: How do you approach community outreach in a divided city like Washington, DC?

MB: If you want to encourage change, kindness is crucial. But what if that doesn’t work? Well, kindness is the only path forward. Jesus had moments where he took a stand, but ultimately, kindness is what makes a lasting impact. It’s surprisingly scarce in today’s world.

CW: What message do you hope to convey to your future grandchildren from this book?

MB: I want them to grasp that success lies in sustained obedience over time. True success is being respected by those who know you best. It’s not about individual accolades but the legacy that comes from living with purpose. I hope they see someone who remained faithful to their beliefs for an extended period, ideally reflecting God’s glory in that journey.
