Mark Carnevale, PGA Tour announcer and ex-player, dead at 64

Mark Carnevale, a PGA Tour announcer and former Tour winner, died Monday, one week after covering his final tournament.

He was 64 years old.

His untimely death shocked the golf world, with PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan calling Carnevale a “beloved member of the Tour family.”

“He was a member of the elite club of PGA Tour winners and subsequently served in numerous roles within the industry, most recently as a key voice in PGA Tour Radio coverage.” Monahan said in a statement.“Mark knows the game inside and out and has done a fantastic job conveying his insights from his unique perspective and with an engaging sense of wit and humour.”

The cause of his death was not disclosed, with the PGA Tour saying only that he died suddenly.

Carnevale played in 212 PGA Tour events during his golf career, winning the Chattanooga Classic in 1992 and earning Rookie of the Year honors at age 32.

He then began to turn his attention to the Korn Ferry Tour, eventually becoming the Tournament Director for the Korn Ferry Tour’s Virginia Beach Open in 2003.

Carnevale played 66 times on the Korn Ferry Tour during his career.

He moved into broadcasting in 2005 and began reporting on PGA Tour events for SiriusXM Radio, his last assignment being the Scottish Open two weeks ago.

“Mark Carnevale was an integral part of our live coverage on our streaming platforms and on PGA TOUR Radio. He was a consummate professional and well-respected by the PGA TOUR players he covered. His insightful analysis and humor will be missed,” Greg Hopfe, senior vice president and executive producer, PGA TOUR Entertainment, said in a statement.

Carnevale’s next assignment was scheduled to be the 3M Open in Minnesota this week.

Carnevale is the son of college basketball coach Ben Carnevale and later played collegiate golf at James Madison University.
