Mark Cuban, the well-known entrepreneur, has shared a surprising favorite for lunch that he believes supports his dietary goals related to protein and longevity. During a recent podcast episode of “Project Swagger” hosted by Robin Arzon at the South by Southwest festival, Cuban called his meal “disgusting” yet effective.
In fact, it was so unconventional that it prompted Arzon’s teenage son to leave the kitchen in a hurry. Cuban detailed how he prepares his lunch: he combines canned clams with an egg white wrap and adds honey on top.
The Texas-based billionaire, who has three children, explained that he made the switch from a vegetarian to a pescatarian diet to improve his iron levels. He emphasizes straightforwardness and nutrition in his meals, stating that an egg white wrap contains approximately 50 calories and 11 grams of protein, while clams contribute around 80 calories and 14 grams of protein along with iron.
Cuban mentioned that he often adds honey to enhance the taste and provide a quick energy source. He further shared that his breakfast usually consists of corn flakes with a dash of honey.
While discussing his eating habits, Cuban noted, “My kids are 16, 19, and 22, and I’ve always taught them the rules of eating as they grew up.” He chuckled, saying that combining liked foods often leads to even greater enjoyment. Arzon appeared a bit skeptical, saying, “I don’t know if many of us are convinced.”
Interestingly, online users reacted with mixed feelings. One commenter on YouTube admitted they were tempted to try the clams, even if the dish looked unappetizing. Another user jokingly suggested Cuban try preparing the clams with Italian flavors like pasta, olive oil, and garlic.
Cuban’s distinctive lunch aligns with his broader philosophy concerning health and longevity. He explained that as he ages, understanding the impacts of his diet, training, and supplements becomes increasingly important. He particularly views his lunch wrap as a kind of protein supplement after workouts.
Nutritionists have commented that his combination, though odd, might have its benefits. Robin DeCicco, a holistic nutritionist, noted that while she wouldn’t personally enjoy such a meal, she can’t argue with its nutritional value. Canned shellfish, including clams, are renowned for being high in absorbable iron and protein.
Considerations for Cuban’s Diet
However, DeCicco pointed out that there are considerations to keep in mind. For instance, excessive sodium levels can be an issue with clams, so opting for low-salt options is advisable. Honey, while providing quick carbs, might spike blood sugar more than complex carbohydrates would, she cautioned.
She emphasized the absence of vegetables in Cuban’s meals, suggesting that adding items like lettuce, tomatoes, or broccoli could enhance the dish by providing essential fiber and nutrients associated with health benefits.
