Marc Gastineau seems to blame Brett Favre for not being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Favre met with the former Jet and one-time NFL single-season sack record holder. He remains furious with the former Packer for “diving in” when Michael Strahan broke the sack record in 2002.
At the 2023 Chicago Sports Spectacular, Gastineau confronted Favre during the filming of his 30-on-30 documentary with ESPN, “The Next York Sack Exchange.”
Favre extended his hand for a handshake, but the Jets legend didn't respond.
“How are you doing?'' Favre asked, which was also ignored by Gastineau, who replied, “How are you doing?'' [Strahan]”
As Favre looked shocked, Gastineau said twice: “I want my bag back.”
“You'll probably hurt me,” Favre replied.
“Well, I don't care, you hurt me,” Gastineau said repeatedly, and Favre walked away embarrassed by the exchange.
Mr. Gastineau, 68, was present when Strahan broke the record in the final game of the 2001 season on January 6, 2002, and accused Mr. Favre of diving to help his friend and star player break the record.
A former member of the famous New York Sack Exchange, he set a record with 22 sacks in 1984.
Gastineau has battled cancer and dementia, among other health issues, in recent years.
“Do you know how long I’ve been thinking about it? [not being in the Hall of Fame]?For a long time,'' Gastineau said while previewing the documentary.
He added, “The NFL should have stopped it and said no, that wasn't a sack. He took my record away from me. Everyone will tell you that Mr. Favre took the dive… and Everyone knows that.”
Troy Aikman said,[Strahan] I received a gift. ”
“He rolled to his right and got sacked by Michael Strahan,” longtime Giants radio commentator Bob Papa said on the broadcast. “Favre ran right into him. It looked like a set play. They're friends. He faked a handoff, rolled to his right, and slid in front of Strahan.”
Favre said after the game that offensive coordinator Mike Sherman “cheated” on the play.
“I didn't really care whether he understood it or not.” Favre said this in his #10 question with Kyle Brandt in 2021..
When Gastineau called out Favre's name, his former teammates, including Abdul Salam and Marty Lyons, called him a selfish player in his prime in the trailer.
“If you don't want to admit you were selfish, that's fine. That's my opinion, you were selfish,” Lyons said.
Years after Strahan claimed the official sack title, Gastineau watched himself fall to a tie for third on the single-season list when Steelers pass rusher TJ Watt tied Strahan's 22.5 sack record in 2021. I saw it.
