Mark Hamill recently participated in a Star Wars-themed video promoting former President Barack Obama’s presidential library in Chicago. His tongue-in-cheek humor sparked some ridicule and memes, but ultimately, it didn’t quite generate the enthusiasm the building’s supporters had hoped for.
In a video shared on May 4, Obama kicks things off with a cheery, “Happy Star Wars Day from the Obama Presidential Center.” Hamill, renowned for his role as Luke Skywalker, adds, “I have a very good feeling about this,” a nod to a well-known line from the films.
The video features Obama portraying a young man eager for adventure, while Hamill playfully links the character to young Luke. He even jokes about blasting the character with a “giant spacer laser,” recalling an iconic moment from the original movie. Obama, however, emphasizes that he’s speaking about today’s youth, nudging them to purchase tickets for the library’s grand opening on June 10, a date declared a holiday by President Biden, not Obama.
“This isn’t just about me,” Obama states, stretching for clarity with an obvious metaphor. “The Obama Presidential Center isn’t simply a museum; it’s a space designed to empower you.”
As the video concludes, Obama makes a half-hearted Yoda impression, to which Hamill refers as a “dad joke.”
Social media reactions to the clip weren’t flattering. One comment read, “This is an absolute disaster for them.” Others critiqued the building’s design, likening it to something out of a villain’s lair.
“Emperor Palpatine announces that the battle station is now fully operational,” quipped one user, summing up the prevailing sentiment about the structure.

Hamill has been a notable supporter of Democratic causes, contributing to Hillary Clinton’s campaign and expressing admiration for Joe Biden, even showing up at a White House press conference to make a humorous reference to the famous Jedi, “Joe Be One Kenobi.”
