Mark Harris Speaks on Concerns About Possible Medicaid Changes

Medicaid Reform Discussion

In a recent interview, Rep. Mark Harris (R-NC) expressed concern that the current Medicaid system is not prioritizing the right individuals. He believes the reforms being discussed mainly aim to preserve the existing structure rather than improve it.

“From my viewpoint, Medicaid is a significant issue,” Harris mentioned. “I genuinely think the existing tax system can’t support the expansion brought about by Obamacare.” He emphasized the urgency for reforms, stating that without changes, costs could skyrocket to $1 trillion in the coming years, which he considers unsustainable.

Harris is advocating for alterations that align with the original intent of Medicaid, which was to support pregnant women, children, the elderly, and those living with disabilities. He highlighted the necessity of transforming the program to serve those who it was initially designed to help.

“There are individuals who genuinely require support from Medicaid, and the current expansion seems to be headed in an unsustainable direction. We have a chance to address this now,” he remarked.

Additionally, Harris pointed out his focus on incorporating workplace requirements into the reform. He expressed concerns that the job requirements linked to Medicaid won’t take effect for another four years, which he finds troubling. “This should have been addressed earlier,” he noted, pointing out the ample time the state has had to make necessary adjustments.

“I’m a proponent of increasing job requirements for healthy adults,” he added, indicating that he believes action should begin well before 2029.
