Former Clinton supporter Mark Penn stated on Wednesday that Democrats are facing political difficulties as certain policies are seen as both bipartisan and extreme by the public.
During an interview on April 27, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer claimed that his party was “completely united.” After a segment from this interview aired on “Morning with Maria,” Penn remarked that Schumer’s stance portrays the party as “purely partisan,” indicating a reluctance to collaborate with Trump for the benefit of the country.
“Chuck Schumer is one of the most popular politicians in the country. I think he sees it as actually more of a partisan hack than someone trying to solve the country’s problems,” Penn commented. He pointed out that the Democrats are viewed as overly partisan and not receptive to working with the president to achieve meaningful progress.
Polling data from NBC News and CNN/SSRS reflected low popularity ratings for Democrats, landing at 27% and 29% respectively.
Despite the evident public discontent, Schumer mentioned in a March appearance on “Morning Joe” that his party’s objective was to undermine Trump’s popularity, a view echoed by minority leader Hakem Jeffries.
“We are fighting in all aspects to chase Trump, not chase him away—especially against adversaries like Trump, because that’s the direction Democrats often take,” he said.
Penn pointed out that while there seems to be a general hesitance among Democrats to collaborate with Trump, an NBC News poll in March found that nearly two-thirds of Democrats preferred their Congressional representatives to avoid compromise with the president.
Trump’s policies have garnered significant public backing, such as measures banning biological men from competing in women’s sports and reducing government waste. However, the Democrats often lean towards the less popular facets of these issues.
