Golden Globe Awards: Stars Speak Out Against ICE

At the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, and Jean Smart shared their views on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the tragic death of Lenny Good, who was shot by ICE agents earlier in the week.

The actors all sported “Be Good” pins during the ceremony, which served as a form of protest against ICE. Sykes, 61, expressed her sentiments about the “really sad” situation while making a statement about her late mother, who was also killed by an ICE officer.

“There are people marching today, and we really need to amplify our voices,” Sykes insisted. “This government’s actions are deeply unjust and must be stopped.” She wore a white pin emblazoned with black lettering on a shiny silver jacket.

Smart, who won the award for Best Female Actor in a Television Series (Musical or Comedy), commented on the current state of the country. “Everything seems overshadowed by what’s happening right now,” she noted. “I feel we’re at a tipping point. It’s important for everyone to remain calm, though, as that requires real strength and concern.”

In her acceptance speech, Smart, clad in a stunning white gown with a pin, stated, “I have so much to share; I vented on the red carpet, so I’ll keep it brief here. But let’s aim to do what’s right, as I believe we all know it.”

The #BeGood campaign, which has backing from organizations such as Marmot and the ACLU, aims to remind communities to remain compassionate amid the turmoil. The initiative also honors Keith Porter, another victim of an ICE incident.

The ACLU has voiced its support for the #BeGood campaign, asserting that “ICE doesn’t make communities safer; it instills chaos.” Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security described Good’s death as self-defense, amidst claims of “domestic terrorism,” a characterization contested by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. He urged ICE to withdraw from the city, stating, “We don’t want you here.”

Ruffalo, who lost out to Stellan Skarsgard for the Golden Globe on Sunday, previously used red carpet appearances to protest as well. At the 2024 Oscars, he wore an Artists4Ceasefire pin to advocate for humanitarian aid in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, emphasizing the need for compassion.
