Mark Teixeira Launches Congressional Campaign in Texas
Mark Teixeira, a former three-time All-Star with the New York Yankees and 2009 World Series champion, announced on Thursday his run for Congress in Texas’ 21st District. His candidacy comes shortly after Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) revealed he would not seek reelection and instead pursue the Republican nomination for Texas Attorney General.
In his campaign statement, Teixeira emphasized his commitment to “Texas Family, Conservative Principles, America’s First Agenda.” His priorities include border security, energy independence, safeguarding the Second Amendment, bolstering the military, and addressing, as he put it, the “indoctrination of radical awakening.”
“As a lifelong conservative and proud Texan who loves our country, I’m ready to fight for the values that make America exceptional,” Teixeira said. “We are prepared to support President Trump in defending the America First Agenda, Texas families, and individual freedoms.”
Teixeira began his Major League Baseball career with the Texas Rangers after being drafted fifth overall in 2001. During his 14 seasons, he earned five Gold Gloves and three Silver Sluggers and was the runner-up for the American League MVP in 2009. He also played for the Braves, Angels, and Yankees before retiring in 2016.
Since stepping away from baseball, Teixeira and his family returned to Texas in 2021. They became involved in business, education, and Christian philanthropy, supporting Governor Greg Abbott and collaborating with the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Notably, he is the first candidate to officially enter the Republican primary for the 21st district, despite competition from Bexar County Republican Vice-Chair Kyle Sinclair and San Antonio City Councilman Mark White, both of whom have expressed interest in running.
Chip Roy has represented this district since 2019, and his recent announcement to run for Texas Attorney General comes as incumbent Ken Paxton seeks a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2026. Roy regards himself as a “fighting and tested warrior” and a “fierce defender of the Constitution.”
Having grown up as the son of a Navy veteran and a school teacher, Teixeira credits his upbringing with instilling discipline and a sense of service. He resides in central Texas with his wife, Lee, and their three children, attending the Austin Ridge Bible Church.
“Playing for the Texas Rangers and raising my family in the Lone Star State has been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” Teixeira reflected. “Now, I’m ready to answer the call to uphold the conservative principles that have shaped my country and my state.”
