CNN’s CEO, Mark Thompson, emphasized his dedication to the network on Wednesday, at a time when ownership changes are causing uncertainty among employees about their futures.

Recently, Netflix dropped its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, allowing Paramount’s offer—which was deemed “superior”—to move forward. If this sale goes through, it would place David Ellison, a media executive closely aligned with former President Donald Trump, in charge of CNN. As a result, there’s a palpable anxiety among CNN staff about the network’s direction. Still, Thompson reassured them, hinting at perseverance amidst the upheaval.

During a Zoom call with staff, Thompson stated, “I’m serious about CNN,” making it clear that he is invested in the network’s future.

The atmosphere at CNN is reportedly tense, with staff members expressing their fear and concern over potential changes following the Paramount acquisition.

“I’m in the midst of something exciting and interesting with you all,” Thompson added. He expressed a desire to carry on the current trajectory despite the looming transition.

CNN sources noted that staff has voiced worries about maintaining editorial independence under new ownership. Feelings of despair, anxiety, and curiosity are rampant as employees await more details about the sale.

In recent years, CNN has faced challenges, particularly in ratings, and there have been significant shifts at CBS under Ellison’s leadership. Critics have aimed their frustrations at previous CEO Chris Licht for attempts to moderate the network’s partisan image from the Jeff Zucker era. Thompson will take the helm after Licht’s departure in 2023.

While Thompson reassured staff of his commitment to CNN, it appears uncertain if Paramount shares the same mindset. Paramount has not returned requests for comment regarding this matter.

Last month, in a bid to ease fears, Thompson sent a note to employees encouraging patience and reminding them of their commitment to viewers. He acknowledged the speculation surrounding the future but urged against premature conclusions about upcoming changes.

“This year is already packed with significant news, especially leading up to the US midterm elections,” he said, emphasizing the importance of focusing on quality journalism in a time of uncertainty.
