Notable items from Friday’s Mets’ Grapefruit League game:
Hit the mark
Mark Vientos hit a home run into the right field seats in the second inning of the Mets’ 3-2 loss to the Cardinals in Jupiter, Florida.
The outburst was Vientos’ first outburst this spring, putting him ahead of third base competition Brett Batty in that category.
Sanchez’s failure
Yolmer Sanchez, the starting second baseman, was charged with a throwing error in the first inning.
The ball got caught in his glove and he couldn’t get a firm grip on it, so he rolled it all the way to first base. This is Sanchez’s second slip-up this spring.
It caught my eye
Starling Marte started the game with a bunt, and in the bottom of the inning he hit a powerful throw from right field that nailed Dylan Carlson, who was trying to advance to third base on a tag-up play.
Saturday schedule
Sean Manaea is scheduled to pitch against the Marlins in Jupiter, Florida.
