Mark Walter Sells Lakers Ownership Amid Speculation
In a surprising turn of events, Mark Walter announced on Wednesday that he sold his stake in the Lakers to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, with the franchise valued at $12.5 billion. This is notable, as it marks the highest valuation for a sports franchise in American history.
Interestingly, Walter’s ownership of the Dodgers appears to remain intact. According to ESPN, he plans to keep control of the Dodgers as part of his Guggenheim Baseball Management Group.
Unlike the Lakers, which Walter purchased just over a year ago through TWG Global, the Dodgers have long been his flagship team within a diverse sports portfolio. He led Guggenheim’s acquisition of the struggling franchise from Frank McCourt for $2.15 billion in 2012.
Under Walter’s leadership, the Dodgers have become a powerhouse in Major League Baseball, clinching three World Series titles and creating a roster that has set new spending records. The team transformed into a revenue juggernaut, notably becoming the first in sports history to exceed $1 billion in annual revenue following Shohei Ohtani’s standout season.
When asked last year how much he trusts the “baseball people” managing the franchise, Walter made a quip, saying he mostly just agrees with their decisions—although his influence is significant.
However, recent weeks have seen fresh speculation regarding his business dealings. Reports surfaced of a federal investigation into his insurance company for potential financial misconduct. Furthermore, it was revealed that the 66-year-old suffered a stroke during the 2024 World Series.
The sale of the Lakers marks a significant shift, especially given how recently he took ownership and his deep-rooted ties with the Dodgers. During his tenure with the Lakers, the team even hired the Dodgers’ chief marketing officer as head of business operations while maintaining close ties with the Dodgers’ leadership.
Both organizations started collaborating for sponsorships, notably with Japanese retailer Daiso, which sponsors both teams in a unique partnership framework. These developments suggested a brighter future of cooperation between two of Los Angeles’s most prestigious sports franchises under Walter’s overall direction.
Now, with the Lakers sold, it seems the Dodgers will continue to reign as the key franchise under Walter’s control. For the time being, there’s little indication this will change anytime soon.
