Mark Walter's position with the Dodgers stays the same despite the sale of Chelsea FC

Mark Walter is offloading another segment of his sports investments.

However, there’s still no sign that the Dodgers will be included in this round.

The longtime owner of the Dodgers made headlines again on Monday, just days after he successfully sold the Lakers. The Financial Times noted that he and his business partner Todd Boley, who is also a Dodgers co-owner, are looking to sell their stake in Chelsea Football Club, a prominent team in the English Premier League.

These recent happenings have sparked fresh questions about Walter’s ownership of the Dodgers, especially after his departure from the Lakers amid a federal inquiry into his insurance company.

Nonetheless, insiders believe Walter isn’t looking to sell his MLB team at this time, as a source informed The California Post on Monday.

Up until now, everything appears to be unchanged from last week, when Dodgers president Stan Kasten stated that the team’s ownership structure would remain unaffected by the Lakers’ sale.

“This is a Lakers story,” Kasten said to reporters back then. “This isn’t really about the Dodgers.”

But, that’s not entirely the case now, particularly since Boley and Walter are mulling over selling Chelsea, a team they’ve owned since 2022.

Still, the potential sale of Chelsea hasn’t come entirely out of left field. There’s been a long-standing conflict involving Boley and Walter as major investors through their private equity firm, Clearlake Capital, which also features new San Diego Padres owner Jose E. Feliciano among its co-founders.

Reports suggest that Boley and Walter are contemplating selling their minority stake in Chelsea to Clearlake Group.

That said, speculation regarding the Dodgers’ ownership will linger due to the limited information about Walter’s business dealings and the ongoing investigations concerning his various enterprises.

Last week, Mr. Kasten expressed that he had “no reason to think” the support for the team from Walter and the Guggenheim ownership group would change, although he admitted he wasn’t well-versed in the details of Walter’s non-sports business or its investigation.

There were also reports linking Dodgers-related businesses (including one called “Dodgers Tickets LLC”) to a broader investigation by federal prosecutors into Walter’s business practices.

All of these factors contribute to a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the franchise as it aims for its third consecutive World Series title this year.

And although there haven’t been any clear signs of change within the organization so far, the situation remains quite uncertain in light of recent ownership news.
