Mark Zuckerberg's $300M superyacht receives negative reactions while arriving in Seattle as Meta cuts jobs there

Mark Zuckerberg’s Yacht Arrival Sparks Controversy Amid Layoffs

Mark Zuckerberg is facing backlash after the debut of his $300 million superyacht, Launchpad, coincided with the announcement of approximately 1,400 layoffs at Meta’s Seattle office.

The 390-foot yacht drew negative reactions as it arrived in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, with onlookers expressing their discontent. One shouted at Zuckerberg to “pay your taxes,” according to reports.

Interestingly, it appears Zuckerberg may not have been on board when the yacht came into view.

Critics online have called out the tech mogul for seemingly flaunting wealth at a time when many employees are facing uncertainty.

In total, Meta has laid off 1,395 jobs in King County, Washington, a notice of which was filed earlier this week.

One user on social media quipped, “We’re just technical buddies who can’t read the atmosphere,” emphasizing the disconnect.

Another post remarked on the poor timing, pointing out that the yacht’s arrival aligned with Meta’s significant layoffs, emphasizing the irony.

Journalist Louis Kampf humorously chimed in, speculating if the yacht’s name was “Let Me Eat Cake” amidst the controversy.

Meta did not provide immediate comments regarding the situation.

The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring, with Zuckerberg previously announcing the reduction of 8,000 jobs and a shift of another 7,000 to AI-related roles.

In Washington, Meta’s Bellevue office employed around 700 people, with additional teams in Redmond and Seattle, and some working remotely.

Interestingly, a local dockworker commented that Zuckerberg’s yacht is “the biggest thing I’ve owned in 14 years,” highlighting the stark differences in experiences.

While Zuckerberg has been linked to the Launchpad since at least 2024, he hasn’t publicly claimed ownership.

The yacht, built by the Dutch company Feadship, features exterior designs by Espen Øino International and interiors by Zuretti Interior Design.

Equipped with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, this vessel is powered by four engines, achieving speeds up to 24 knots, or about 30 miles per hour.

In recent times, Meta has faced scrutiny for its investment in AI development while simultaneously announcing substantial job cuts. The company’s capital spending is anticipated to reach $145 billion this year.
