Sandy Alcantara’s Future in Miami Seems Secure
It looks like Sandy Alcantara is set to stay with the Miami Marlins. Although trade rumors have surrounded him for the past few seasons, the organization intends to not only keep him but to also “strengthen strategically,” as reported.
Bruce Sherman, the team owner, recently indicated that they see Alcantara as a long-term asset. He emphasized Alcantara’s significance to the franchise: “He’s an icon for our franchise. I’m looking forward to the years ahead and what this will be for us,” he expressed.
He added, “I have a lot of respect for Sandy. He is the ultimate professional.” Alcantara is woven into the very fabric of the organization’s culture, alongside the general manager and other key figures.
There’s something about Alcantara’s demeanor—his quiet intensity mixed with a fierce competitiveness. He’s not just in it to win; he wants to be that go-to guy every five days, and honestly, I can’t wait to see him on the moundweek after week.
There was a time in late 2025 when speculation about a trade intensified, largely due to the general manager’s silence regarding Alcantara’s future.
However, the Marlins’ recent surge—26 wins in their last 34 games—has quelled discussions about trading him. Alcantara’s contributions have been vital, especially with him leading the league in innings pitched.
Despite a tough previous season, where he recorded a career-high ERA of 5.36, he rebounded well in 2026, bringing it down to 4.00. That’s quite an improvement.
Alcantara has served as the Marlins’ ace since joining in 2018, and his crowning achievement was undoubtedly winning the Cy Young Award in 2022, after a remarkable season with 228 2/3 innings and a stellar 2.28 ERA.
Reflecting on Alcantara, Sherman noted, “He represents not only the Marlins but the best of baseball. He’s a humble guy. I’ve traveled with him. I email him every once in a while. It’s a challenge to separate being a fan from ownership perspectives, but genuinely, he is just an extraordinary person.”
