The Marlins are in a tough spot without a right fielder as they aim for the last National League playoff spot.
Dane Myers had to leave the game after a scary moment. He collided with the wall while attempting to double Max Kepler during an 11-inning game against the Phillies, which the Marlins narrowly won by a score of 6-5.
Unfortunately, Myers didn’t get up right away and had to be carted off the field. Later, he was diagnosed with a knee laceration that manager Clayton McCullough described as “pretty nasty.”
Myers is now on the injured list, and with only five games left in the season, his year is effectively over.
“It was a pretty severe gouge on his leg,” McCullough told reporters after the game. “Dane’s definitely going to the IL. It’s unfortunate, but this just shows what kind of player he is.”
Myers was injured in the second inning while trying to make a play. The Phillies were ahead 1-0, and he leaped to catch a ball that was drifting toward the infield but then had to stop and grasp his knee, which led to his removal from the game.
In a season filled with injuries, Myers ends with a batting average of .235, six home runs, and 31 RBIs. He previously spent time on the IL due to an oblique strain and had another stint earlier this season.
Last year, he missed two months after injuring his left ankle in a mishap involving a door.
Despite Myers’ injury, the Marlins’ victory brings their season record to 77-80. They’ve been on a bit of a roll lately, going 11-4 in their last 15 games, keeping their postseason hopes alive.
The team has two more games against the Phillies before facing the Mets for a three-game series to wrap up the regular season.
The Marlins will finish the series against the Phillies on Thursday, and then Sandy Alcantara will pitch in the opening game against the Mets on Friday.
