Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Roger Marshall (R-KS) are pressuring the Biden administration to weaponize the federal government against opponents of the credit card bill.
Mr. Marshall and Mr. Durbin, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, push Reported “alarming reports” of unfair and deceptive practices in airline frequent flyer and loyalty programs to the Department of Transportation and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).If true, Marshall would do this. appear Durbin has slammed Democrats for working with him to open up the government to the American people.
Citing reports, both senators said, “Airlines are changing their point systems in ways that are unfair to consumers, including devaluing the value of points. This means that more points will be required than are currently available.”
Mr. Marshall and Mr. Durbin are lobbying the federal government to target opponents of their bill, but Congressional officials are not feeling well.
“This entire investigation is only being done because Durbin’s credit card bill didn’t pass and this is his revenge. The Biden administration is weaponizing every agency against Elon Musk for not toeing the line. Just as they did, Durbin and his allies are using the administrative state as a weapon,” a Senate aide told Breitbart News.
The aide continued, “It’s grossly inappropriate.” “Better suited to be a banana republic than America.”
Durbin and Marshall push It aims to introduce more competition into payment processing by requiring banks to work with at least one alternative payment network other than industry leaders Visa and Mastercard. Critics of the bill argue that it would not only make payment processing less secure, but also undermine credit card rewards programs. In fact, major airlines have voiced opposition to the bill.
In a statement to Breitbart News, a spokesperson for Airlines for America, a group that represents major U.S. airlines, said, “Millions of Americans want to take advantage of the tremendous benefits that airline credit cards offer. That’s why they choose to use airline credit cards every day.” Points cards create tremendous value for consumers, and the Durbin-Marshall bill would significantly change credit card points and negatively impact travelers. ”
FreedomWorks writes that the Durbin-Marshall bill could: scrap Credit card perks, just as the Durbin Amendment limited debit card perks.
Airlines to America Estimate 63% of total frequent flyer miles/points earned in 2022 will be generated through airline credit card usage, and these credit cards will pay for 15 million domestic traveler payments and generate $23 billion in 2022 This means that it supported economic activity.
Incredibly, despite the average American’s interest in credit card rewards programs, Marshall Said In September, he said credit card perks are “for the rich.”
Every time a consumer swipes a credit card to make a purchase, the transaction is routed through a payment network such as Visa or Mastercard. Visa or Mastercard charges merchants an interchange fee to secure the transaction, and credit card issuers like Chase and Capital One receive a portion of the interchange fee to cover the cost of the loan.
In response to a request for comment from Breitbart News, a spokesperson for Durbin pointed to statements by the senator who disputed claims that the bill targets airline compensation.
Durbin Said On the Senate floor in December:
They have also enlisted allies, including some in the airline industry, to insist under their breath that my bill would eliminate frequent flyer programs. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby recently said my bill would “eliminate the rewards program.” Let me be clear: this is a patently false statement.
“Airlines have a long history of fraudulent behavior, retroactively taking away benefits and perks Americans have bought into through their points and rewards programs,” Marshall said in a statement to Breitbart News. “Many consumers often pay extra for their tickets, especially to earn miles or earn status upgrades, but they don’t want airlines to continually raise thresholds. The rug will just be pulled out from under them when they decide to do so. Americans are tired of having no recourse when major airlines operate fast flights and betray their loyalties.”
Sens. Marshall and Durbin have not yet responded to follow-up questions about whether efforts to obtain cooperation from the Department of Transportation and the CFPB are in response to airline objections to credit card charges.
