Anyone who knows women’s football knows that Marta is a legendary player who defines the game.
The 38-year-old Brazilian forward, playing in what may be his final Olympic Games, received a direct red card for using a high kick while attempting to clear the ball, which unfortunately also hit Spanish defender Olga Carmona in the head.
Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer (male or female) broke down in tears after being shown the red card, while being consoled by her teammates and several Spain players.
Marta has had a successful career on the field and off it has been an active advocate for women in sport. He announced his intention to retire in April This was her sixth Olympic appearance in an international competition that followed.
A six-time Olympic champion, six-time FIFA World Cup winner, six-time FIFA World Player of the Year winner and the most nominees of any male or female player with 13, Marta has now effectively retired from her international career and will return to the states to lead the NWSL’s Orlando Pride franchise.
“After 2025, Marta will not be with the team as an international player,” she told reporters in April. “I’m very calm about it. [decision]”Because I am very optimistic about the development we are experiencing with young athletes.”
Brazil was facing Spain in their final group match, on the verge of qualifying for the quarterfinals after surviving a tough group that also included Japan and Nigeria, but their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages were dashed when they lost 0-2 to Spain, as Japan was leading Nigeria 3-1 at the start of the match.
With the win, Japan now overtakes Brazil on points and goal difference, meaning Brazil will need help from other countries, such as Australia, who play the United States today, to clinch the final spot.
Even if they advance, they will face the tournament’s top-seeded team without their legendary player, and one loss would send Brazil home and Marta retiring with a dark stain on her otherwise illustrious international career.
