Marxist group People's Forum held protests in support of Maduro

Demonstrators supporting Nicolas Maduro gathered in Times Square and outside the Brooklyn facility where the former Venezuelan leader is held. This organizing effort was led by the People’s Forum, a far-left group with connections to China.

Shortly after President Trump announced that U.S. forces had arrested Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, the group called for “urgent nationwide protests.” They asserted that the situation is not about drug trafficking or democracy but rather about seizing Venezuela’s oil and exerting control over Latin America.

Maduro faces numerous allegations of fraud stemming from the 2024 presidential election, which many viewed as a sham.

After being transported by U.S. forces to New York City, Maduro and Flores were indicted on drug trafficking and other charges in federal court on Monday.

On Sunday, clashes erupted between pro-Maduro protesters and a group of Venezuelans celebrating outside the detention center.

The People’s Forum described the arrest as an extraordinary violation of a sovereign nation’s rights, emphasizing the extent to which they believe the U.S. regime is willing to go.

Interestingly, one participant in the anti-Maduro camp, who fled Venezuela under Maduro, criticized the pro-Maduro crowd as “stupid,” expressing confusion over their presence and understanding of the situation.

The People’s Forum, which has been involved in organizing protests nationwide, is closely affiliated with the Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL), with overlapping leadership. On Monday, the PSL arranged a small pro-Maduro rally, urging the crowds to chant for his release.

There have been ties between PSL and other controversial figures, including one allegedly linked to a violent incident outside a museum in Washington, D.C.

Support for the People’s Forum notably comes from Neville Roy Singham, a wealthy tech figure residing in Shanghai, whose anti-war activist spouse is also involved with the organization. However, the group appears to be facing financial struggles. They recently called for donations to secure permanent housing, having raised nearly $47,000 towards a $2 million goal.

Adding to their recent activities, the People’s Forum also hosted seminars supportive of Cuba and Maduro at their current location. Notably, soon after a significant terrorist attack on Israelis, they organized protests that included aggressive displays against Israel.
