Mary Cosby was interviewed by police regarding claims of domestic violence just weeks before her son, Robert Cosby Jr., passed away.
A police report from Salt Lake City indicated that the “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” star talked to officers on January 9, 2026, about her son’s relationship with his former spouse, Alexiana Smokov.
During the conversation, Cosby mentioned she hadn’t observed any significant conflicts between her son and his ex-wife. While she recognized they had argued, she maintained that there was no physical altercation.
Law enforcement noted that Cosby denied any claims of her son being violent, stating he was not raised in that manner.
She also claimed that there were no visible injuries to either party while they were at her home. However, there was a mention of Robert Jr. and another individual jumping off a balcony while under the influence.
Smokov had reached out to the police on November 23, 2025, to report a domestic violence incident with Robert Jr. that reportedly took place in May 2024.
She alleged that Robert Jr., who was incarcerated at the time, became furious and disposed of drugs in the toilet, claiming he was “tired of his drug use.”
This incident reportedly took place at Cosby’s residence in Utah.
Police also probed Robert Jr. while he was in prison, during which he acknowledged using fentanyl at the time of the 2024 incident, although he struggled to recall all the details.
He confided to officers that he had intimate relations with his then-wife and expressed concerns about his mental health, indicating he felt “erratic and irrational” for some time.
In November 2025, Smokov filed for divorce after three years of marriage, having secretly wed in a Utah courthouse in August 2022. The divorce was finalized in January.
Leading up to Robert Jr.’s unfortunate death, he faced charges of domestic violence, and a warrant for his arrest had been issued.
Previously, he had served two months in jail for breaching a pretrial protection order against Smokov.
As part of his release on February 3, he was required to complete community service and attend substance abuse and anger management classes over the next 24 months.
On February 5, just two days after his release, he was charged with felony aggravated assault and assault causing serious bodily injury.
Tragically, Robert Jr. was found dead on February 23 after police responded to an overdose call, prompting a death investigation.
